Originally designed on the Deschutes River in Oregon for fishing in areas with very little back cast room. I wanted a line that would load the rod with only 10-20 feet of line out, turn over large bead head flies with an indicator and shoot 30 feet with one roll cast. The first lines sizes, 4-6 (195-235 grains) were primarily for the trout guys. As switch rods became more popular as a tool for trout and light steelhead fishing, requests for larger sizes were answered with Ambush lines being made in sizes 7- 10 (266-400 grains). The tricky part in trying to line switch rods is some manufactures rate these rods as a true single hand, while others rate them as spey rods, both with the same line designation. Typically a good starting point for switch rods is an Ambush 8 weight (290 grains) will load a 5 weight switch rod, Ambush 9 for a 6wt switch and a Ambush 10 for a 7wt switch (rated for spey application). If the rod is a true single hand, then just match the same Ambush line weight to the rod line weight. Of course, the best thing to do is visit your local fly shop and see if they have some sample lines to cast or attend a spey event with your rod and cast the lines on the water. The next production of Ambush lines, the 11-14 weights (450-600 grains) are for the double handed casters that wanted a line with a very short head for fishing in really tight areas. They require a very short casting stroke and work best with the shorter 11-12 ½ foot rods typically used in fishing smaller rivers or big rivers with little or no room for a D-loop. These lines have a slightly longer head to accommodate the extra length in the rod. What I really like about the Ambush lines is that you can attach either a long mono leader, a poly leader of any density or a heavy chunk of T-14 and the line will still cast well. Another nice feature of Ambush lines is the integrated shooting line to head (no loops to hang up when casting short or when landing a fish ) and the cool two tone color, designed specifically for easy detection of the head/shooting line junction in low light conditions.

Try to keep sand and dirt out of the ferrules. Occasionally use a few drops of any reel oil or grease on the reel seat threads to keep it operating smoothly. Paraffin wax can also be used on the ferrules if needed to ensure a proper fit.
Do not use tape on your ferrules. If you do we’ll come steal all your bacon and PBR.

Grant to finance Cowlitz summer steelhead study
A $140,000 grant will pay to study the recycling of summer steelhead in the lower Cowlitz River this year with an eye toward improving angling in the popular stream.
The Columbia River Salmon and Steelhead Endorsement Advisory Board approved the grant in February. The money comes from the $8.25 fee paid by anglers who fish the Columbia and its tributaries.
Historically, summer steelhead returning to Cowlitz Salmon Hatchery were recycled to the lower river to give sportsmen a second chance.
Recycling ended over the concern that non-native hatchery steelhead might stray into lower Cowlitz tributaries and cause negative effects on the native wild steelhead known to spawn in the streams.
Wolf Dammers, district fish biologist for the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, said the money will pay for 60 radio tags and 440 visual tags to be inserted in steelhead captured at Cowlitz Salmon Hatchery.
The tagged fish will be taken to the lower Cowlitz and released. Their movement will be monitored using an array of telemetry stations. Also, a creel sample will check for the harvest of the steelhead in the sport fishery.
Summer steelhead enter the Cowlitz beginning in May and return to the hatchery through early December. Some are used as spawning stock, while the excess go to food banks.
“The results of this study could support the reinitiation of a recycling program to enhance the summer steelhead sport fishery,’’ Dammers said.
The fish are expected to do one of four things: return a second time to the hatchery; get caught by an angler; remain in the lower Cowlitz or a tributary through the spawning period, or leave the Cowlitz before spawning time.
Dammers said radio tagging and fish movement monitoring is being subcontracted to the U.S. Geological Survey Biological Research Station at Willard in Skamania County.
“This USGS group is recognized as having a very high level of expertise in the region in radio-tracking studies dealing with fish movement,’’ he said.
Summer steelhead fishing in the Cowlitz River was about a $3 million business in 2009, supporting 59,000 angler trips and a catch of 7,200 fish.
A large number of guides fish the Cowlitz, helping the economy of Longview, Kelso and Toledo.
